The Ponderosa Ridge Trail begins across from the Horse Corral on the Soda Pocket Road, heading east around the base of Little Horse Mesa. The trail goes through thickets of chokecherry, locust and oak before crossing open grassy meadows with abundant wildflowers and the chance to see deer, turkey and black bear. As the trail turns north, it enters a forest of tall Ponderosa pines that cover the slopes as you descend to Lake Maloya. For a six-mile hike, follow the signs for the Lake Maloya and Opportunity Trails to return to the starting point.
This 2 mile trail is rated moderate to strenuous. The elevation change is 500 feet.

Facilities: Over 40 campsites, restrooms, group shelters, and showers are provided at the Ponderosa Ridge Campground.

Best Time To Visit: The Ponderosa Ridge Trail is open year-round.

Fees: Day usage fees and overnight camping fees do apply.

Accessibility: This trail is handicap accessible.

Rules: This trail is located within the Sugarite Canyon State Park; park regulations apply.

Directions: To reach the Ponderosa Ridge Trail from Raton, take I-25 exit 452 to NM 72. Travel east about 7 miles to the junction of NM 526. Take the left fork that goes uphill. Continue on to the visitor's center and beyond to access the lakes.

To reach the Ponderosa Ridge Trail from Trinidad, take I-85/87 to Raton and follow the directions above from Raton.
