Tahoe City retains a more relaxed small-town attitude. Highway 89 meets Highway 28 at Lake Tahoe's only outlet, the Truckee River. Rafting down the Truckee is a common activity in summer.
Visitors can start from the Kaspian Picnic Area and hike up the unmarked trail to the top of Eagle Rock for amazing panoramic views of royal-blue Lake Tahoe. Several miles further along Highway 89 is popular Chamber's Beach.
Tahoe City is a popular year-round recreation destination. During winter months, people flock to the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, which boasts 100 exciting runs that satisfy beginners and experts alike.
The Tahoe State Recreation Area is found just east of Tahoe City and is an ideal place to partake in outdoor activities, including swimming, picnicking, camping and fishing.
