Crescent City was founded by gold-seekers in 1851, and gets its name from the horn-shaped bay. The city is protected from cold north winds by Point St George, the headland immediately north of the harbor.
Two museums, operated by the Del Norte Historical Society, display exhibits of Crescent City's changing fortunes. The main museum is in an old jailhouse. Here are exhibits of North American Indian artifacts, logging memorabilia and displays on pioneer life in the county. Battery Point Lighthouse Museum offers a guided tour, shipwreck displays and books.
