Fishing In National Forests Klamath National Forest With elevations ranging from 450 to 8,900 feet above sea level, Klamath National Forest is one of America's most biologically diverse regions. It is home to excellent wildlife and bird watching. The forest offers over 30 campgrounds. Mendocino National Forest The Mendocino National Forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities - camping, hiking, backpacking, boating, fishing, hunting, nature study, photography, and off-highway vehicle travel. Shasta-Trinity National Forest The huge Shasta-Trinity National Forest offers a wide range of recreational activities. Some of these include hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, camping, boating, fishing, sightseeing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Return to Top of Page Lakes & Reservoirs Blue Granite Lake Blue Granite Lake is located in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Rainbow Trout are available for fishing. This lake is heavily used by packers and pack stock during the summer months. Also be aware that black bears. Bluff Lake Bluff Lake is open year-round and offers small Brook Trout. Owned by Timber Products Company. Burney Lake Burney Lake is located in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Eastern Brook Trout are available for fishing. It has an elevation of 5,500 feet and is 15 acres. The depth is 25 feet. Castle Lake Castle Lake is open year round and offers Rainbow, Brook, and Brown trout. There are also Golden Shiner minnows. Chipmunk Lake Chipmunk Lake is open year round and offers Brook Trout. This lake frequently freezes over and may be devoid of fish. Deadfall Lake Deadfall Lake is open year-round and offers Brook and Rainbow trout. Requires a 2-3 hour hike to access. Devil's Lake Devil's Lake is open year-round and offers Brook and Rainbow trout. No vehicular access. Grey Rock Lake Grey Rock Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located in the Castle Crags Wilderness area. Grouse Lake Grouse Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. No vehicular access. Gumboot Lake Gumboot Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located about 15 miles southwest of the town of Mt. Shasta. Hancock Lake Hancock Lake is located in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Trout are available for fishing. Heart Lake Heart Lake is open year-round and offers Brook trout. The small lake is located in the Castle Crags Wilderness area about 12 miles outside of the town of Mt. Shasta. Helen Lake Helena Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. The lake is located in the Seven Lakes Basin about 20 miles outside of the town of Mt. Shasta. Highland Lake Highland Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook Trout. The lake is located less than 15 miles west of Interstate 5 at the Gibson exchange. Iron Canyon Reservoir Iron Canyon Reservoir is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. Many primitive roads and "jeep" trails radiate out from Iron Canyon Reservoir. Lake McCloud Lake McCloud is open year-round and offers Rainbow trout. The lake is located about 20 miles south of the town of McCloud. Lewiston Lake Lewiston Lake is open year-round and offers Raionbow, Brown, and Brook trout. It is located just below Trinity Lake and has a wheelchair accessible fishing platform. Lower Caldwell Lake Lower Caldwell Lake is open year-round and offers Brook trout. The lake is very secluded and located less than 10 miles outside of the Weed area. Lower Seven Lake Lower Seven Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. The lake is located in the Seven Lakes Basin, about 15 miles outside of the town of Mt. Shasta. Lower West Parks Lake Lower West Parks Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located about 10 miles outside of the Weed area. 1.5 hour walk required to access. Middle Caldwell Lake Middle Caldwell Lake is open year-round and offers Brook trout. The lake is very secluded and located less than 10 miles outside of the Weed area. 0.5 mile hike required to access. Middle West Parks Lake Middle West Parks Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located about 10 miles outside of the Weed area. 1.5 hour walk required to access. Mumbo Lake Mumbo is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. 4-wheel drive is recommended to access the lake. Pond Lily Lake Pond Lily Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located less than 15 miles west of Interstate 5. Porcupine Lake Porcupine Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It sits in a crater-like depression about 10 miles outside of the town of Mt. Shasta. Scott Lake Scott Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located just east of Gray Rock Lake. Secret Lake Secret Lake is located in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. It offers trout for fishing and is 8.5 acres long. The elevation is 7,557 feet. Shasta Lake Shasta Lake offers 16 different kinds of fish and numerous land and water activities. It is the largest manmade reservoir in California. Tamarack Lake Tamarack Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located about 30 miles by road from Mt. Shasta City. Timber Lake Timber Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located in the Grey Rock Lake Basin less than 15 miles outside of Mt. Shasta City. Toad Lake Toad Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow, Brook, and Brown trout. It is a popular fishing spot less than 15 miles outside of Mt. Shasta City. Trinity Lake Trinity Lake is a trophy bass lake and offers 9 different species of fish. The also has several boat ramps, public campgrounds, marinas, as well as quality wheelchair fishing access. Upper Caldwell Lake Upper Caldwell Lake is open year-round and offers Brook Trout. It is a small, secluded lake located about located less than 10 miles outside of the Weed area. 0.5 mile hike required to access. Upper Deadfall Lake Upper Deadfall Lake is open year-round and offers Brook Trout. It is very popular; however requires a walk to access. Upper Echo Lake Upper Echo Lake is open year-round and offers Brook trout. It is a very small lake in the Seven Lakes Basin about 15 miles outside of Mt. Shasta City. Upper Grey Rock Lake Upper Grey Rock Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. It is located in the Castle Crags Wilderness area. Upper Gumboot Lake Upper Gumboot is open year-round and offers Brook Trout. It is located about 15 miles southwest of the town of Mt. Shasta. Upper Mumbo Lake Upper Mumbo Lake is open year-round and offers Brook trout. Fishing can be good; however, there is a swampy shoreline. 4-wheel drive is recommended to access the lake. Upper Seven Lake Upper Seven Lake is open year-round and offers Rainbow and Brook trout. The lake is located in the Seven Lakes Basin, about 15 miles outside of the town of Mt. Shasta. Upper West Parks Lake Upper West Parks Lake is open year-round and offers Brook trout; however, periodic freezing may have left the lake with no fish. 1.5 hour walk required to access. Whiskeytown Lake Kayaking, sailing, fishing, swimming, and waterskiing are some of the favorite activities one can experience within the cool, clear waters of Whiskeytown Lake, located in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. South Fork Trinity River South Fork Trinity River offers Steelhead, Chinook, and Coho salmon. It is located northwest of the town of Hyampom. Trinity River The Trinity River offers Chinook, Steelhead, Coho, and Rainbow trout. Kayaking and rafting is popular along this river. Upper McCloud River Upper McCloud River is meanders through the hills south of Highway 89 (Mt. Shasta Mt. Lassen Highway) and offers Rainbow, Brook, and McCloud River Redband trout. Upper Sacramento River Upper Sacramento River offers Rainbow and Brown Trout, and Smallmouth Bass. It is located adjacent to Interstate 5 between the town of Mt. Shasta and Shasta Lake.
