| Hat Creek Recreation Area includes the Intermountain Area communities of Burney, Fall River Mills, Hat Creek and Old Station. In the shadow of Lassen Peak, seven campgrounds and four picnic areas are nestled along ten miles of Hat Creek.Opportunities for fishing, hiking, camping, picnicking, wildlife observation and natural history are many. Lava tubes, dormant and extinct volcanoes, massive lava flows and fault lines reveal a fascinating volcanic past.Fish the world renowned stream, hike geologic wonders and experience excellent photo opportunities of Lassen Peak in the Hat Creek Recreation Area.Subway CaveSubwaySee an underground cave formed by flowing lava. Located just off Highway 89, 1/4 mile north of Old Station junction with Highway 44. The lava tube tour is self-guided and the walk is 1/3 mile long. Bring a lantern or strong flashlight as the cave is not lighted. Sturdy shoes and a light jacket are advisable. Picnic Tables, Vault Toilets Available. Subway Cave is closed during the winter months.Hat Creek Rim OverlookNearly 1 million years ago, active faulting gradually dropped a block of the Earth's crust (now Hat Creek Valley) 1,000 feet below the top of the Hat Creek Rim, leaving behind this large fault scarp. This fault system is still "alive and cracking."A heritage of the Hat Creek area's past, it offers magnificent views of Hat Creek Valley, Lassen Peak, Burney Mountain, and, further away, Mt. Shasta. This site can be seen parallel and east of Highway 89 in Hat Creek Valley. You'll also notice a fire scarred area on the Rim. This area was burned over during the 1987 Lost Fire which burned over 24,000 acres of land.Snowmobiling in the Hat Creek Area is available at the Ashpan Snowmobile Area. Ashpan Snowmobile Area is located just off Highway 44 approximately four miles north of the Highway 44 and 89 junction at the northwest entrance to Lassen Volcanic national Park. Ashpan has 35 miles of designated trails. |
