| | Arizona's state capital, Phoenix, is in the center of Arizona. An ancient race once inhabited the valley. They constructed some 135 miles of irrigation canals in the Valley of the Sun, before disappearing completely. Roving bands of Indians discovered the canals and dwellings and named the people "Ho Ho Kam" - the people who have gone. Today, Phoenix is built above this ancient civilization, named after the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes: the Phoenix.Ranging over tens of thousands of acres, the Phoenix mountains and arid desert preserves offer something for everyone, including hiking, biking, camping, and horseback riding. Trail users can choose from rugged mountain paths that offer stunning mountain and city views, to laid back strolls in the lowland wilderness.Historic Heritage Square is a reminder of Phoenixs Victorian heritage. Historic Heritage Square includes the only remaining group of homes from the original town of Phoenix, and is full of museums, shops, and restaurants. The square is a part of Heritage and Science Park which also includes the Arizona Science Center.Go to the home of the Arizona Rattlers, America West Arena, for arena football. For stadium football, Phoenix offers the Arizona Cardinals.
