| The Prescott Outings Club, founded in 1975, sponsors three hikes each week from September through May. While these hikes are usually in the Bradshaw and Mingus Mountains, they may be as distant as the Vulture Mountains to the south or the San Francisco Peaks to the north. Each hike is planned and scouted in advance and led by an experienced hike leader. Each hike is rated on a scale from 1 (most strenuous) to 10 (least strenuous). The Saturday Regular hike is the most vigorous of the scheduled hikes, typically being 6 to 10 miles in length and rated approximately 2 to 5 in difficulty. These hikes normally leave at 9 AM (8 AM in September and May) from the M&I Bank parking lot on the corner of Montezuma Street and Sheldon Street in Prescott. The Saturday Alternate hike is an intermediate level hike, setting a more leisurely pace with stops along the way. They are typically about 6 miles in length and rated approximately 4 to 7 in difficulty. These hikes normally leave at 9 AM (8 AM in September and May) from the M&I Bank parking lot on the corner of Montezuma Street and Sheldon Street in Prescott. The Sunday hike is the least difficult, typically 3 miles in length and rated 6 to 9 in difficulty. These hikes leave at 1:30 PM from the M&I Bank parking lot on the corner of Montezuma Street and Sheldon Street in Prescott. In addition to the three scheduled hikes each week there are a number of Special Events each year such as lecture hikes, moonlight hikes, picnics and dinners, and overnight camping trips.Due to the length of the Saturday hikes a lunch must be carried; those hiking on Sunday normally bring only a light snack. All hikes require participants to carry sufficient water for the day and be appropriately clothed for the anticipated weather conditions. Hiking shoes are required. And please, no pets on the hikes.Guests are invited to participate in up to three hikes, after which membership is required. A detailed Hike Schedule is available to all guests at a cost of $3.00; this fee to be applied towards membership. The cost of membership in the Club is $7.00 annually. In addition, guests and members pay a fee of twenty-five cents for each hike taken. As the group typically car pools to the trailhead, a five cent per mile (50 cents minimum) gratuity to the driver is suggested. |
