The Arizona Trail, the dream of Flagstaff teacher and hiking enthusiast Dale Shewalter, will eventually be a 790 mile non-motorized trail that traverses the State from Mexico to Utah. The Arizona Trail is intended to be a primitive, long distance trail that highlights the State's topographic, biologic, historic, and cultural diversity. The Arizona Trail Association is a membership organization, seeking active supporters of the Arizona Trail, coordinating volunteers, and providing other essential services to the Arizona Trail project. The mission of the Arizona Trail Association, as adopted by the Board of Directors is:
"to coordinate the planning, development, management, and promotion of the Arizona Trail for the recreational and educational experiences of non-motorized trail users."
-Arizona Trail Association, January 22, 1994
Goals of the Association include:
  • developing public awareness, education, and support for the Arizona Trail
  • encouraging and coordinating management of the Trail project, including planning of
  • the trail route
  • fundraising on behalf of the Arizona Trail
  • creating an organizational capability to achieve the vision and mission
As the nonprofit organization for the cross-state Arizona Trail, the Arizona Trail Association (ATA) is involved in many activities that relate to the Arizona Trail. It is these activities that assist in bringing the Arizona Trail to completion, a trail that is becoming one of the premier long-distance trails in the country.
