Tonto Creek is about 17 miles east of Payson, and offers camping, fishing, picnicking, and water-play. The Arizona Game and Fish Department stock sections of Tonto Creek with rainbow trout periodically. They begin stocking the creek in mid April and stock it on a regular basis until late August.


Facilities: There are no facilities available at Tonto Creek. The nearest commercial services and supplies are available in Payson.

Best Time To Visit: Tonto Creek is Open April through September.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: No trash service: PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT!

Directions: To get to Tonto Creek travel 17 miles east of Payson on State Highway 260. Just east of Mile Marker 269 (at Kohl's Ranch) turn left (north) on Forest Road 289. Travel 4 miles to the parking area just outside the entrance to the fish hatchery. Forest Road 289 parallels Tonto Creek most of the way to the hatchery. Park in the lot. Please respect private property along the creek.
