The difficult 9-mile Hermit Trail is a route to the Hermit Rapids, some of the largest rapids along the Colorado River. Hermit Trail is located in the Grand Canyon National Park.
The hike begins at 6,640 feet elevation, and then descends to 2,400 feet. Begin this hike from the end of West Rim Drive at Hermits Rest. This trail descends through the upper stratum of the canyon along a carved stairway.
This is an unmaintained steep trail that requires caution. It is rocky and a strenuous hike. There is no assistance along the trail so experienced hikers only.
Hermit Trail day hikes are to Santa Maria Spring or Dripping Springs. Trail conditions are tougher than the Bright Angel and South Kaibab Trails. Allow extra hiking time because of trail conditions. Plan on taking twice as long to hike up as it took to hike down. Hiking boots recommended.
Hermit Trail is for experienced desert hikers.
Slightly less than a mile and a half from the trailhead this route reaches the Waldron Trail. Waldron Trail leads southward toward Horsethief Tank.

Facilities: No facilities are available at Hermit Trail trailhead or along the trail.

Best Time To Visit: The Hermit Trail is open year-round. The West Rim Drive is open to private vehicles from October through March. At all other times a free shuttle takes visitors to Hermits Rest.

Fees: An entrance fee will be collected to enter the Grand Canyon National Park. There are no additional fees to use the trail.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Over 250 people each year are rescued from hiking the Grand Canyon. A majority of these people tried to hike to the Colorado River and back in the same day. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS STUNT!

Directions: To reach The Hermit Trail from South Entrance Station of the Grand Canyon, drive northward on South Entrance, continue to the East Rim Drive/West Rim Drive junction. Bear left on to West Rim Drive and follow it 8 miles, through Grand Canyon Village, to Hermits Rest.
