Set along the South Fork of the Little Colorado River, South Fork Campground is set among ponderosa pine, with views of the 400-acre forest fire of 1989. Originally a site of a historic fish hatchery, it was converted into a campground in 1940.
The South Fork trail (Trail #97) originates in the campground and follows the river toward the south. The trail travels to Mexican Hay Lake, 7 miles to the southeast. The Little Colorado River, South Fork Trail and Mexican Hay Lake are all nearby.
The ridge to the east of the campground was the site of a 400 acre human-caused forest fire in May 1989. Feel free to explore the area; it is interesting to note the diversity of the fire's behavior. In some areas it merely skimmed over the grass, in others it killed whole stands of trees. This area is fairly typical of wildfire behavior and recovery.
There are 12 single sites available for tents, trailers and motorhomes. South Fork Campground is not suitable for large RVs. This campground is for those who enjoy camping in a semi-developed area.
