Slate Creek Divide Loop

Slate Creek Divide Loop surroundings include chaparral vegetation, riparian habitat associated with the west fork of Sycamore Creek, and a Douglas Fir/Ponderosa Pine overstory for the northern portions of the route. This route is located near the Mazatzal Wilderness Area.
The route starts on Forest Road 25 right off of State Highway 87 traveling west and then north to Forest Road 25A. Take Forest Road 25A north along the west fork of Sycamore Creek to the junction of Forest Road 3722. Go east on Forest Road 3722 to its intersection with Forest Road 201A. There two ways to go from here. The first is to go north on Forest Road 201A past Horse Camp Seep to its junction with Forest Road 201. Take Forest Road 201 east and then south past Pine Mountain Mine, Red Rock, and Slate Creek Divide to its intersection with Forest Road 25. Take Forest Road 25 back to State Highway 87. The second is to go east on Forest Road 201A to the junction with Forest Road 201. Follow Forest Road 201 south past Red Rock and Slate Creek Divide to the junction with Forest Road 25. Take Forest Road 25 back to State Highway 87.
Check current/forecasted weather conditions and with the ranger district as northern portions of the loop do receives snowfall. The East and especially the West Sycamore Creeks may have substantial flow if thunderstorms occur. This route is 13 miles for the first loop and 10 miles for the second loop, and both have a more difficult rating. Mountain Biking is permitted on this route.

Facilities: There are no facilities provided at Slate Creek Divide Loop. Gas, food, and lodging can be found in Payson.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Slate Creek Divide Loop.

Best Time To Visit: Slate Creek Divide Loop is open early spring through early winter, depending on the weather.

Fees: No fee is charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Do not enter the Mazatzal Wilderness Area as bicycles are prohibited there.

Directions: To reach Slate Creek Divide Loop from Payson, travel south on State Highway 87 to the Slate Creek Divide and turn right on Forest Road 25. The route starts here.
