Buzzard Roost Canyon Route

Buzzard Roost Canyon Route surroundings vary mostly from grasslands and meadows to pine overstory, but there are intermittent riparian and chaparral vegetation on the southerly slopes. The Salome Wilderness Area is located just south of the route. Due to the isolated location of this route, it is recommended to make plans to stay overnight in one of the campgrounds located nearby.
The route starts right off of State Highway 288, on Forest Road 416 and travels west to the junction with Forest Road 486. Take Forest Road 486 down Buzzard Roost Canyon to the intersection with Forest Road 609. Follow Forest Road 609 east back to State Highway 288. This route may be traveled in either direction.
Check current/forecasted weather conditions and with the ranger district prior to use as this area does receives snow. This route is 15 miles long and has a more difficult rating. Mountain biking is permitted on this route.

Facilities: There are no facilities provided at Buzzard Roost Canyon Route. Several campgrounds are located nearby. Gas, food, and lodging can be found in Young.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Buzzard Roost Canyon Route.

Best Time To Visit: Buzzard Roost Canyon Route is open late spring through early fall, depending on the weather.

Fees: No fee is charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Do not enter the Salome Wilderness Area on bicycles, or any other mechanized/motorized vehicles as they are prohibited in the wilderness.

Directions: To reach Buzzard Roost Canyon Route from Payson, travel east on State Highway 260 to State Highway 288. Travel south on State Highway 288 past Young to Forest Road 416. This is the northern routehead, the southern routehead is located 5 miles south on State Highway 288 and is Forest Road 609.

To reach Buzzard Roost Canyon Route from Apache Junction, travel northeast on State Highway 88 to State Highway 188. Take State Highway 188 southeast to State Highway 288. Go north on State Highway 288 to Forest Road 609. Forest Road 609 is the southern routehead, while the northern routehead can be accessed by traveling north on State Highway 288 to Forest Road 416.
