Red Hills Trail offers views of scenic vistas in the Mazatzal Wilderness Area. Parts of it are steep and some sections can be hard to follow. It goes into a little visited area, climbing in and out of several drainages. This trail is 8.6 miles long and has a difficult rating. Hiking and horseback riding are permitted on this trail.

Facilities: Red Hills Trail provides a corral at one of its trailheads.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted at Red Hills Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Red Hills Trail is open spring through fall, depending on the weather.

Fees: No fee is charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Neither motorized or mechanized transport are permitted on this trail. The maximum group size is 15; the maximum amount of saddle or pack animals of any kind is 15 per group.

Directions: To reach Red Hills Trail from Payson, travel west on main Street (becomes Forest Road 406) 5 1/2 miles (after turning off State Highway 87) towards the East Verde River. Turn left on Forest Road 3414. Follow this road 6 miles to a parking area and corral. Take North Peak Trail west to the Mazatzal Divide Trail. Go north on the Mazatzal Divide Trail to its intersection with Red Hills Trail.

To reach Red Hills Trail from Scottsdale, travel north on Scottsdale Road to the Cave Creek Road. Go east and north on the Cave Creek Road for 35 miles to a T-junction with Forest Road 269. Turn right for 12 miles to the trailhead. High clearance vehicles are recommended for this road; however there are times (after rains, etc.) when even a 4x4 has trouble. Go west on the Dutchman Trail to its intersection with Red Hills Trail.
