The maximum group size is 15; the maximum amount of saddle or pack animals of any kind is 15 per group. Directions: To reach Mescal Ridge Trail from Payson, east State Highway 260 for 11.4 miles, turn onto Forest Road 405A for 2.7 miles to the junction with Forest Road 405. Continue straight ahead on Forest Road 405 for 3.2 miles to the trailhead just south of the private land. This road is very steep, and not recommended for two-wheel drive vehicles pulling horse trailers.
