Mazatzal Divide Trail is popular and well laid out. It is a major north-south route in the Mazatzal Wilderness Area.
This trail is 27 miles long and has a moderate rating. Hiking and horseback riding are acceptable means by which to traverse this trail.


Facilities: Mazatzal Divide Trail provide horse corrals at its trailhead. Gas, food, and lodging can be found in Payson.

Best Time To Visit: Mazatzal Divide Trail is open spring through fall, depending on the weather.

Fees: No fee is charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Neither motorized or mechanized transport are permitted on this trail. The maximum group size is 15; the maximum amount of saddle or pack animals of any kind is 15 per group.

Directions: To reach Mazatzal Divide Trail City Creek Trailhead from Payson, travel west on Main Street (which becomes Forest Road 4060) towards the East Verde River. 11 miles after turning off State Highway 87, turn right into a small parking area (located a few hundred feet beyond a sharp switchback). This road is very steep in spots, and 4x4s are recommended for hauling horses. There is a small pipe corral available at the trailhead.

To reach Mazatzal Divide Trail Peeley Trailhead from Payson, travel southwest on State Highway 87 to Forest Road 201 and go north on that road for 7 miles to its end. This road gets progressively rougher and may require 4WD. Not recommended for horse-trailers or sedans.
