Skull Mesa Trail

Skull Mesa Trail is a very difficult 3.5-mile trail that climbs to 4,560 feet elevation, from 3,260. Skull Mesa Trail features panoramic views of the desert foothills. This is a good place to see deer, javelina, and snakes. The trail is not recommended for novice equestrians or inexperienced stock. Due to the tall grasses in the area visitors will find the rock cairns a useful guide to finding the path.

Facilities: There are no facilities available at Skull Mesa Trail.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted at Skull Mesa Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Skull Mesa Trail is normally open year-round.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Directions: To get to Skull Mesa Trail from Scottsdale from north AZ-101-Loop: Take Scottsdale Road exit number 34, turn right on Scottsdale Road. Turn right on north Tom Darlington Drive, and then turn left on Cave Creek Road. From Cave Creek: Travel north on Forest Road 48 to Forest Road 247 the trail starts at the junction of 247 and 48.
