Bear Flat Trail

Bear Flat Trail is steep for the first quarter of a mile, but then it passes into an unpredicted grove of mixed conifer. This trail is in the Hell's Gate Wilderness Area and is very easy to follow.
It is 9.25 miles long and has a moderate rating. Hiking and horseback riding are permitted on this trail.

Facilities: There are no facilities provided at Bear Flat Trail. Gas, food, and lodging can be found in Payson.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted at Bear Flat Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Bear Flat Trail is open spring through fall, depending on weather.

Fees: No fee is charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Motorized and mechanized vehicles are not permitted on this trail. The maximum number of people per group is 15, 15 is also the maximum number saddle or pack animals of any type allowed on the trail.

Directions: To reach Bear Flat Trail Bear Flat Trailhead from Payson, travel east on State Highway 260 for 11.4 miles Turn onto Forest Road 405A for 2.7 miles to the junction with Forest Road 405. Continue straight ahead on Forest Road 405 for 3.2 miles to the trailhead just south of the private land. This road is very steep, and not recommended for two-wheel drive vehicles pulling horse trailers. The Bear Flat Trail begins across the creek near the private land.

To reach Bear Flat Trail Gordon Canyon Trailhead from Payson, travel east State Highway 260 for 23 miles (3 miles past Christopher Creek), and turn right on Forest Road 291. Continue down Forest Road 291 for 3.5 miles until reaching Forest Road 200. Follow Road 200, 5.8 miles to the trailhead. The east end of the Bear Flat Trail begins here.
