Barnhardt Trail

Barnhardt Trail is scenic but has long uphill grades. It is one of the heaviest-used trails in the Mazatzal Wilderness Area. This trail is 5.9 miles long and has a more difficult rating. Hiking and horseback riding are permitted on this trail, but horseback riding is not recommended.

Facilities: There are no facilities provided at Barnhardt Trail. Gas, food, and lodging can be found in Mesa.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Barnhardt Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Barnhardt Trail is open spring through fall, depending on weather.

Fees: No fee is charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Neither motorized or mechanized transport are permitted on this trail. The maximum group size is 15; the maximum amount of saddle or pack animals of any kind is 15 per group. Horseback riding is not recommended for this trail.

Directions: To reach Barnhardt Trail from Mesa, travel north on State Highway 87 (the Beeline Highway) to the junction with State Highway 188. 4 miles beyond this junction turn left on Forest Road 419 (this turn-off is just before crossing the Rye Creek Bridge, about 1 mile south of the Rye Creek Store). Follow Forest Road 419 for 4.7 miles to the trailhead.
