 | | Wenima Wildlife Area is located north of Springerville and features 3 different habitats: A stream habitat, irrigated pasture habitat, and upland habitat. The stream habitat is a section of the Little Colorado River and within its waters are both native and introduced fish species. The native species include Little Colorado Spinedace, Speckled Dace, Bluehead Mountain Sucker, and Little Colorado Sucker. The introduced species may include the Fathead Minnow, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, and Carp.This habitat can provide food and cover for small mammals such as the Arizona Montane Vole. The species in the irrigated pasture habitat include Canada Geese and intermittently Snow Geese. There are reports of nesting Mallards and Cinnamon Teal, and seasonal use by other species. This habitat also supplies key food and cover assets for big game, such as Mule Deer, and small game such as Mourning Doves and Cottontail Rabbits.The uplands habitat provides food and cover for various wildlife, including the plausible White Mountains Ground Squirrel. The cliff areas of this zone provide roosting or perch sites for various birds, including raptors. This zone provides potential habitat for special status species like the Peregrine Falcon and Ferruginous Hawk, and other raptors like the prairie falcon and golden eagle.Other species that may be found in this area include Bald Eagle, Western Yellow-Billed Cuckoo, Mountain Plover, American Kestrel, Belted Kingfisher, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, Black-Crowned Night-Heron, Green-Backed Heron, Yellow-Breasted Chat, Black Phoebe, Gray Catbird, Mountain and Western Bluebird, Beaver, Pronghorn Antelope, Ringtail, ground squirrels, and chipmunks. |
