Railroad Grade Trail follows an old railway that used haul logs and later passengers to and from the Apache National Forest. The railway has not been used by trains in over three decades, and has since then been converted for use by horses, hikers, and mountain bikers.
Though it is not used by trains anymore, this trail still has an old fashioned trestle bridge to cross a gorge. It is rated at a moderate difficulty for all trail users, and is 19 miles long.

Facilities: There are restrooms provided at the Railroad Grade Trail trailheads. Lodging, gas, and food can be found in Greer, Springerville and Alpine.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted at Railroad Grade Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Railroad Grade Trail is open from May through October.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Practice standard trail etiquette and right of way.

Directions: To reach Railroad Grade Trail Big Cienega Trailhead from Springerville, travel west on State Highway 260 to the trailhead which is located on the south side of the road.

To reach Railroad Grade Trail Sheep Crossing Trailhead from Springerville, travel west on State Highway 260 to State Highway 373. Take State Highway 373 south to Forest Road 87, from there take Forest Road 87 to State Highway 273. Travel south on State Highway 273 to the trailhead.
To reach Railroad Grade Trail Lightning Ridge Trailhead from Springerville, travel southwest on State Highway 261 to State Highway 273. Take State Highway 273 northwest to the trailhead.
To reach Railroad Grade Trail Railroad Cove Trailhead from Springerville, travel southwest on State Highway 261 to State Highway 273, from there take state Highway 273 southeast to the Big Lake access road. The trailhead is located on the northwest side of the lake.
