Escudilla National Recreation Trail is the trail that leads up to the top of Escudilla Mountain, the third tallest mountain in Arizona. The trail starts in an area where the large wildfire of 1951 burned, which is noticeable by the number of burnt stumps in the area. It then traverses through a grove of aspen, and then it alternates between stands of aspen, spruce, and fir with some meadows thrown in for good measure.
Several overlooks along the trail present overwhelming views. Escudilla Mountain is the third largest mountain in the state and that means that the temperatures are relatively cool year round. There is a Forest Service fire tower located at the summit, which can offer an even higher vantage point from which to see the San Francisco Peaks, the Blue Ridge Primitive Area, and even Mt Graham.
This trail is 3 miles long and is rated as a moderate. Hiking and horseback riding are acceptable means to travel this trail.
