Fred Haught Trail #141 is an historic trail and part of the Cabin Loop Trail System. It was named after a rancher who once used it to move cattle and supplies from ridge to ridge and valley to valley in the roadless wilderness above the Mogollon Rim. Today it provides hikers and horseback riders access to this scenic area of shallow canyons and forested ridges.
The Fred Haught Trail passes through mixed stands of ponderosa pine, white fir, and Douglas fir on the cooler canyon bottoms and slopes. Stands of aspen and damp draws with bigtooth maple trees create bursts of autumn color in October. In the bottom of the main draws, water-loving plants, such as willow and sedge, grow.
This trail was almost lost to neglect after a system of ridge top roads replaced it as the main route for commerce and travel in the 1950's. However, a renewed interest in the area by the public and history buffs inspired its recent reopening.
This hike is trail leisurely and scenic, with a good chance to see wildlife and ample opportunity to imagine what it must have been like when horses and trails were the only way of traversing this picturesque countryside.
At 6.7 miles and an elevation change of about 300 feet, this trail is considered moderate in difficulty. Hikers, equestrians, and bicyclists are welcome on this trail.
