Brush Trail #249

Brush Trail #249 is entirely within the rugged Mazatzal Wilderness Area, which hosts a healthy variety of wildlife. The northern end of the trail is an old "cat trail" with sharp switchbacks. Traveling from 5,200 feet to 5,900 feet of elevation, the trail passes through mountain chaparral. This trail is part of the 790-mile, cross-state Arizona Trail, which extends from Mexico to Utah.
With a total length of 4.2 miles, and an elevation change of about 700 feet, this trail is considered very difficult. Hikers and equestrians are permitted to use this trail.

Facilities: A parking area is available for Brush Trail #249.

Reservations: Brush Trail #249 does not require or accept reservations.

Best Time To Visit: Brush Trail #249 is open year-round.

Fees: No fees are charged to use this trail.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicapped-accessible.

Rules: This is a Wilderness Area, no mechanized vehicles, including bikes, are allowed. No more than 15 people in a group.

Directions: To reach Brush Trail #249 from Payson: Take Highway 87 south to FR 406. Turn west and travel 11 miles to the City Creek Trailhead. From there, take Mazatzal Divide Trail #23 south to Red Hills Trail #262. Continue west 2 miles on Red Hills Trail to Brush Trail #249.

Brush Trail can also be accessed via Doll Baby Trailhead, located a few miles farther west on FR 406. From Doll Baby Trailhead, take Bull Spring Trail 2.5 miles west to Brush Trail #249.
