Abert Nature Trail 3 is an interpretive loop trail in the pines, beginning and ending at the Ponderosa Campground. The trail has numbered signs that correspond with a brochure describing the various flora and fauna found in the area. During the summer, the brochure is available at the campground. It is also available year-round at the Payson Ranger District office.

With a length of 1.3 miles and an elevation change of about 270 feet, this is considered an easy hike. Hikers and equestrians are permitted to use this trail.

Abert Natural Trail was named after the Abert Squirrel that makes its home in the Ponderosa pines. This squirrel is also called a tassel-eared squirrel because their tassels are very distinct during the colder parts of the year, but almost disappear during the summer months.

Facilities: Abert Nature Trail 3 offers a parking area, restrooms, and a campground.

Best Time To Visit: Abert Nature Trail 3 is open year-round.

Fees: No fees are charged to use this trail.

Accessibility: This trail is handicapped-accessible, with a compacted natural tread, and less than 10 percent slope.

Rules: Pets must be on a leash.

Directions: To reach Abert Nature Trail 3 from Payson: Take Highway 260 13 miles northeast to Ponderosa Campground.
