White Mesa Trail #86 starts on the west side of Casner Canyon. The trail enters the Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness and passes through typical Upper Sonoran Desert vegetation, including prickly pear, agave, and juniper.
The intermittent flow of water in Casner Canyon has exposed several of the geologic layers found in the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. The trail provides an up-close look at these rock layers as it gently ascends the west side of the canyon and ends just beyond a gate. A short hike from the gate to the top of White Mesa provides a panoramic view encompassing Apache Maid Mountain, the San Francisco Peaks, the red rocks of Sedona, and the Black Hills. A trail length of just 1 mile and total elevation change of 900 feet make for a hike of moderate intensity until reaching White Mesa.
