The Sharlot Hall Museum is the largest museum in the central territory of Arizona. Exhibits include human and natural history spanning the years from before the founding of Prescott in 1864 to the present. The museum site includes nine buildings and four special gardens that include the Territorial Women's Memorial Rose Garden.
Sharlot Hall Museum is a Prescott cornerstone; no visit to Prescott would be complete without stopping at Sharlot Hall! Visitors should especially take note of the Territorial Women's Memorial Rose Garden which features a sun dial.
A visit to the museum is highlighted by a tour of the Governor's Mansion. Founded in 1928 by historian and poet Sharlot M. Hall, the museum explores the rich diversity of regional heritage through festivals, living history events, outdoor theater performances, changing exhibits, and publications and research services. The museum is also home to an on-site museum store, archives, and a library.
Sharlot Hall Museum is named after its founder, Sharlot Mabridth Hall (1870-1943), who became well known as a poet, activist, politician, and Arizona's first territorial historian. Sharlot Hall was one of the West's most remarkable women.
As early as 1907, Ms. Hall saw the need to save Arizona's history and planned to develop a museum. She began to collect both Native American and pioneer material.
In 1927, she began restoring the first Territorial Governor's residence and offices and moved her extensive collection of artifacts and documents opening it as a museum in 1928.
Today, the Museum features seven historic buildings, compelling exhibits and beautiful gardens, which serve as the setting for numerous public festivals. The Library and Archives, open to the public, hold a vast collection of rare books, original documents, historical photographs, maps and oral history.
The Blue Rose Theater offers an entire season of historically based plays, and Living History programs bring the past alive through hands-on demonstrations.
