Mail Trail #84, which follows the old delivery route of mail riders delivering mail to the Childs Power Plant, drops from the top of the Mogollon Rim into the Fossil Springs Wilderness. As it passes through a grassland, look for rock cairns to mark the indistinct route. When it reaches the canyon bottom, the trail heads west along Fossil Springs Wilderness.
At Fossil Springs, the trail passes through an extremely lush and varied riparian area. The springs pour out over a million gallons of water an hour, creating an incredibly diverse oasis that provides habitat for over 30 species of trees and shrubs and 100 species of birds. The trail ends near the power plant spillway.
With a distance of 3.1 miles and the total elevation change of 1300 feet going mostly downhill, the hike may be considered reasonably easy.
