Harding Springs Trail #51 extends from the bottom of Oak Creek Canyon to the top of the east canyon rim, with scenic views of the upper canyon. The trail ascends steadily in the shade of firs and pines. It tops out in a ponderosa pine forest. The view is mostly obscured during the climb, but once the trail reaches the canyon rim, a short walk south leads to a rock outcropping that provides a spectacular view.
To extend the hike, follow a 1.25-mile primitive path north along the rim to a large cairn marking the top of Cookstove Trail #143. The shady, mostly level path is well marked by cairns. Follow Cookstove Trail down switchbacks to the canyon floor and back to Hwy. 89A. Cookstove Trailhead is at Pine Flat Campground, off 89A about 1 mile north of Harding Springs Trailhead.
While this trail is relatively short at 3.5 miles, its total elevation change of 700 feet suggests a hike of moderate difficulty.
