Prescott National Forest officials have permanently closed the Granite Basin Group Campground just west of Prescott. Granite Basin Group Campground is where campers would rent the entire campground for a group of campers.
The regular Granite Basin campground (Yavapai Family Campground), where users rent one campsite at a time, will remain open.
The decision to close the group campground was not easy, officials said, but it was necessary because of resource damage issues. The decomposed granite soils of the road and campsites are constantly eroding and washing into drainages that lead directly to Granite Basin Lake. Overuse by campers parking off the established road decreases vegetation and adds to the runoff. All of this leads to increased sedimentation in Granite Basin Lake, which decreases fish habitat and reduces the quality of fishing.
The Forest service plans to rehabilitate the Granite Basin Group Campground area to a more natural state, thereby improving watershed, soils and vegetation. Within the next 5-10 years the agency will consider a new group campground at Granite Basin in a different location.
Granite Basin Lake is man-made and about 5 surface acres. Although fishing is usually rated as only fair to poor, the patient angler can often catch bluegill, largemouth bass, or catfish.
