Bear Howard Trail #100 (formerly known as A.B. Young Trail) is believed to have been built originally by C.S. "Bear" Howard in the 1880s. It was reconstructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps under the direction of A.B. Young in the 1930s. From the trailhead, the trail begins a moderately steep ascent and enters Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness Area. The trail quickly rises above the shady creek area, revealing fine views of Bear Howard Trail #100 and some interesting rock formations. The trail climbs 1,600 feet in 1.6 miles over 33 switchbacks to the rim of Oak Creek Canyon. Here it enters a ponderosa pine forest and heads west, gradually ascending 0.8 miles to its end at East Pocket Knob Fire Lookout Tower. The trail is only 2.4 miles, but the total elevation change of 2,000 feet suggests it may be considered somewhat difficult.
