The Salt River Canyon Wilderness Area contains approximately 32,100 acres and was established in 1984. The Salt River and its spectacular canyon bisect the wilderness for its entire length. Elevations range from 2,200 feet at the canyon's lower end, to 4,200 feet on White Ledge Mountain.

Transportation is mainly by river raft in the canyon. A Recreation Opportunity Guide for experienced river-runners is available from the Globe Ranger Station. This Recreation Opportunity Guide provides information about the river, including descriptions of the rapids.

Facilities: There are no developed facilities.

Reservations: Reservations are accepted for guided trips.

Best Time To Visit: The Salt River Canyon Wilderness Area can be visited practically any time, however mandatory visitor permits are required between March 1 and May 15. The application for these permits is December 1 through January 31 each year.

Fees: Some permits may be needed to enjoy your trip to the Salt River Canyon Wilderness Area.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Motorized equipment and mechanized transport are prohibited in the Salt River Canyon Wilderness Area.

Directions: To reach the Salt River Canyon Wilderness Area from Globe take Highway 88 north to Young Highway (288) and a few miles after crossing the Salt River take the Cherry Creek Road exit east.
