The 400 acres of Big Lake is at 9,000 feet elevation. Big Lake is very popular among campers and families. To accommodate the numbers, it is stocked each spring and fall with more than 30,000 trout. Rainbow is the best yield with good catches of brookies and cutthroat trout.
Big Lake is perfect for boating and welcoming to shore fishing as well. The lake, aptly named because of its size, offers great fishing, easy access, but the feeling of being exclusive fishing waters because anglers are not likely to intrude upon another's fishing area. There is always plenty of parking at Big Lake and the parking lots are RV friendly with large spaces.
South Cove: offers anglers a boat launch, picnic area with two ramadas that offer picnic tables and barbeque grills. South Cove at Big Lake also provides accessible restrooms and plenty of sidewalks for access.
Railroad Cove: offers a new boat launch area as well as handicap restrooms. However, the path to the restrooms is not paved so access might be restrictive to those of limited mobility.
Big Lake Dam: is accessible via a narrow, pot hole filled road to the dam. This is a primitive area and parking lot.


Facilities: A grocery store that offers bait, tackle, boat rental and some supplies is available at Big Lake. There are plenty of campsites in Brookchar, Cutthroat, Grayling, or Rainbow Campgrounds. In addition, the lake offers boat ramps, fish cleaning stations, restrooms, and picnic facilities. Potable water, showers, trash, and an RV dump are available at the campgrounds.

Best Time To Visit: Big Lake is open May to November, with snowmobile access in the winter.

Fees: No fees are charged to use the lake.

Accessibility: Big Lake offers limited accessibility with reserved parking spots and accessible fishing docks. However, the floating boat docks are only usable during times of high water levels. Restrooms are accessible inside, however the doors are a bit narrow.

Rules: Boats must be a single 8 horsepower motor or less. All anglers 14-years and older must have a valid Arizona fishing license with a trout stamp.

Directions: To reach Big Lake from Springerville, go to the Big Lake Recreation Area. Big Lake is located about 25 miles south of Springerville on State Road 273.
