Big Lake Lookout Trail is a short but sometimes arduous hike, as it is a steady uphill climb from the trailhead to the tower. Aspen, spruce and Douglas fir are the most common trees seen on this hike. This is a steep and narrow trail and is not recommended for mountain bikes.

The Big Lake Lookout Tower was constructed in 1933 and remodeled in 1967. The tower is 30 ft. tall and has a 12 ft. square observation area. This tower is generally staffed from May through July. The primary duty the lookout is to detect forest fires. Visitors are welcome, but not if their visit will interfere with the lookout's job.

Best Time To Visit: Big Lake Lookout Trail is open April through November, depending on snowpack.

Rules: This trail is within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest; forest regulations apply.

Directions: To reach the Big Lake Lookout Trail from Springerville, travel west on State Highway 260 3 miles to State Highway 261. Go south on Highway 261 17 miles to forest Route 113. Go south on Forest route 113 3 miles to Forest Route 115. Go west on Forest Route 115 1 mile to Forest Route 559 and Rainbow campground. The trail can be accessed from Loop D in Rainbow campground.
