Rainbow Campground is located among mixed conifer and aspen and is the largest campground in the Big Lake Recreation Area complex. Deer, skunks, and bears are common campground visitors. A variety of hummingbirds make the campground their home amid the mixed conifer and aspen from June through September. A spur trail in loop D connects the campground with the Indian Springs hiking and biking trail.
Nearby activities include picnicking, fishing, boating, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, bird watching and wildlife viewing. Be prepared for rain, often heavy through July and August. Because of the high elevation be prepared for cool night time temperatures.
Rainbow Campground offers campground hosts to assist visitors in fining a suitable campsite.


Facilities: Rainbow Campground offers potable water, toilets, showers, and trash. There are picnic tables, tent areas, and fire rings at all sites. In addition, the campground offers an RV dump station is available on site. There is a small store at Big Lake that offers supplies. Additional supplies can be found in Springerville.

Best Time To Visit: Rainbow Campground is open mid-May through September.

Fees: A camping fee is charged. There are additional frees charged for trash dumping, air for tires, and dumping. Some fees are waived for campers staying at Rainbow Campground.

Accessibility: Campsites 52 and 66 are posted as handicap accessible. There is a cement sidewalk access to water and toilets from both campsites. In addition, the restrooms are all accessible and one shower.

Rules: Pets must be restrained or on a leash. Trailers and motorhomes up to 32 feet are permitted and tents are welcome.

Directions: Rainbow Campground is located in the Big Lake Recreation Area. Big Lake is located about 25 miles south of Springerville on State Road 273.

Reservations: Reservations are accepted for some sites at Rainbow Campground. All campsites in loops A, B and C accept reservations and campsites in loops D, E, and F are first-come, first-served.

Reservations are recommended for peak summer months.
