The northern end of 5.1 mile-long E & L Trail begins on Ash Creeek Ridge, which overlooks Crook's Canyon and Mount Union. Ruins of old mines and dwellings dot the landscape along this trail, particularly in the Ash Creek drainage.
From Ash Creek Ridge, the trail goes south, dropping into the Ash Creek drainage and staying along the creek for 2.3 miles. At mile 2.3, the trail turns sharply northeast, climbing another drainage for 1.2 miles back to Ash Creek Ridge and FR 70. This portion of the trail is the most difficult, though not hard to follow.
It is more than a mile to where the trail ends on FR 52, just 0.2 miles north of the Palace Station. At the point in Ash Creek where the trail turns northeast, another spur continues south for 0.4 miles to FR 82. Total elevation change is 1,120 feet.
