The Nelson Trail is a moderately difficult 8.68-mile hike, as it climbs from 5,100 feet in elevation, to 5,800 feet. This trail was originally a service trail for the livestock industry.
It serves as part of the network of trails traversing the Pine Mountain Wilderness. It connects with the Willow Springs Trail, the Verde Rim Trail, and the Pine Flat Trail. The lower portions of the trail stay mainly in chaparral vegetation. There is considerable ponderosa pine on the portion of the trail from the trailhead near the Nelson Place to Bishop Spring.
