Madera Canyon Recreation Area is a cool retreat from the surrounding desert, boasting big trees, a creek, and views of the Santa Rita Mountains. It is a great destination for wildlife watchers and nature lovers who come to see the more than 240 species of birds that live here.
On the busiest weekends during spring and summer, the canyon is closed to additional vehicles once capacity is reached; on these days visitors have to wait until someone leaves to enter the canyon but, while waiting, enjoy the nature trail near the entrance to Madera Canyon Recreation Area.


Facilities: The Madera Canyon Recreation Area features picnic areas, restrooms, drinking water, and an amphitheater.

Best Time To Visit: Spring and fall are the best times to visit this area.

Fees: A small donation is requested as an admission fee for Madera Canyon Recreation Area.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Pets must be on-leash at all times.

Directions: To reach the Madera Canyon Recreation Area from Tucson: take I-19 south approximately 30 miles to the Continental Road exit. Turn east under the highway and follow the signs 13 miles to Madera Canyon.

To reach the Madera Canyon Recreation Area from Sierra Vista: take merge onto I-10 to the Benson Highway exit- exit number 267- toward I-10 Business/Valencia Road. Turn slight left onto E Benson Hwy. Turn left onto E Valencia Road/I-10 BL W. Continue to follow E Valencia Road 6 miles. Merge onto I-19 S via the ramp- on the left- toward Nogales. Follow I-19 south to the Continental Road exit. Turn east under the highway and follow the signs 13 miles to Madera Canyon.
