Wing Mountain Snow Play area is a popular place for Flagstaff sledding. Eight miles north of Flagstaff, at the end of a short spur road, the US Forest Service has marked over seventeen miles of designated snow play area.
Wing Mountain Snow Play Area consists of several trails and a large sledding area in the cinder pit, all of which provides winter fun for all ages.


Facilities: There are temporary toilet facilities, a plowed parking area, trash service, and a concession stand for hot drinks and selling sleds are available at Wing Mountain Snow Play Area.

Best Time To Visit: Hours of operation are 9:00 AM 4:00 PM daily (dependent on snow availability and weather conditions). Wing Mountain Snow Play Area is generally open Mid-December through March, depending on snow.

Fees: Day-use fees are charged for this area.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible. There may be accessible temporary toilet facilities.

Rules: Only soft snow-play items are allowed; no wood, metal or fiberglass sleds/snowboards are allowed. Please maintain the family environment by cleaning up after the visit, observing appropriate noise levels for car stereos, and by using family-oriented language.

Please be aware that the Wing Mountain Seasonal Motorized Wheeled Vehicle closure is effective December 1-March 31. The roads within this area will be closed to wheeled vehicles as soon as enough snow falls for snow play and other winter activities that the area is managed for. The roads affected by the closure include Forest Roads 222, 519, 519A and 222B beyond Wing Mountain Pit.

Directions: To reach Wing Mountain Snow Play Area from Flagstaff, drive 8 miles north from Flagstaff on Hwy 180 and turn west (left) on Forest Road 222B. It is 1 mile to the cinder pit parking lot.

Hwy 180 is paved. Forest Road 222B is graveled. Both are generally plowed, but they can be hazardous due to winter conditions. Travel time is usually around 30 minutes.
Do not attempt to enter Wing Mountain Snow Play Area from Forest Road 222.
