Hell's Gate Trail is a moderate, 8-mile trail that climbs 1,671 feet from a beginning elevation of 3,984 feet. A deep network of steep, rugged canyons of Tonto and Haigler Creeks, which contain some awesome rock formations and deep emerald pools, characterizes the area. Wildlife includes deer, elk, bobcat and mountain lion, black bear and javelina. Tonto and Haigler Creeks offer high quality cold-water fishing opportunities.


Facilities: Campsites are available at the trailheads and at Hell's Gate Trail.

Best Time To Visit: The Hell's Gate Trail is normally open April through November.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicap accessible.

Rules: If you PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT!

Directions: To reach the Hell's Gate Trail from Payson travel approximately 11.5 miles east of Payson on State Highway #260, (past mile marker 266). Turn right onto Forest Road #405A and follow it for 0.5 mile to a cement water trough on the right, which is the Hell's Gate Ridge Trailhead. You will be on Hellsgate Trail #37, and 6 miles of hiking will bring you to the creek.
