Grapevine Trail is an easy, 5-mile hike, beginning at 4,400 feet, and climbing only 500 feet in elevation. This trail offers access to Sierra Ancha Wilderness and overlooks of Cherry Creek drainage. Most of this trail was an old jeep trail, which generally contours under the high bluffs of the Sierra Ancha. Wildlife includes the black bear, javelina and deer.


Facilities: There are campsites at the old Pueblo mining area and at Billy Lawrence Trailhead located near the Grapevine Trail.

Best Time To Visit: The Grapevine Trail is normally open spring through fall.

Fees: There are no use fees associated with this trail.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Closed to all motorized equipment, bike or other mechanical transport.

Directions: To reach the from Grapevine Trail from Payson take Highway 260 east for 25 miles to the Chamberlain Trail. Turn southeast onto the Chamberlain Trail for 4 miles to AZ 288. Take AZ 288 south to Young AZ. Continue south on State Highway #288, take Cherry Creek Road (Forest Road #203) north of Roosevelt Lake. Travel east approximately 31.8 miles to the trailhead. A high clearance or 4X4 vehicle is needed on this road. This trailhead can also be reached by driving south on Forest Road #203 from Board Tee Saddle on State Highway #288, or can be accessed from the Billy Lawrence Trailhead via Lucky Strike Trail #144.
