The terrain on the Iron King Trail transitions from desert to forest. It provides an even surface for hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers. This area is home to pronghorns, deer, cottontails, jackrabbits, javelina, coyotes, rattlesnakes, bullsnakes, and mountain lions, among other species. This almost four-mile-long trail connects with the 4.5-mile Peavine National Recreation Trail in Prescott. Iron King Trail itself begins north of the old rail line and the two become contiguous within a short distance.
The railroad theme is evident all along the trail. Antiques track maintainers and trailers that were used to take food to railroad workers decorate the parking lot, with a kiosk at the trailhead. Designers used railroad switches as mileposts. Rest stops have as benches rustic crew carts. Actual flatbed rail cars comprise the decks of sturdy bridges, designed to accommodate emergency vehicles and strong enough for dump trucks.
The trail crosses three metal bridges; it is recommended that riders dismount and walk horses across the bridges as metal horseshoes will slip on the bridge surface.
Hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers are permitted on Iron King Trail.
