The Thumb Butte area is one of the most popular destinations in the Prescott National Forest. Mild weather, cool ponderosa pine forest, a comfortable picnic area, and a variety of trails that offer hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers many routes to explore.
Over 122,000 people live less than an hour's drive of the Thumb Butte area. Private property in the tri-city area can be seen from many of the trails. Please be extra careful while visiting this wildland-urban interface area so others can enjoy the forest too.
Thumb Butte is a basalt formation on the west side of Prescott. Faces and clean crack routes up to 250 feet long. At almost 6000 feet in elevation with most lines on the north face this is a decent place to climb on warm days. There are also some good basalt boulders down among the pines nearer to the parking area.
There is also an extensive picnic area for day-use with 9 individual picnic tables, grills, and drinking water. There are also a group ramada (12 tables) and smaller ramadas (3 tables).
