The Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area consists of 20,850 acres including precipitous box canyons, high cliffs, and pine-covered mountains. Though the extremely rough topography limits cross-country travel, there is an extensive system of trails. A wide variety of plant and animal species are found within the Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area.
There is an extensive system of trails. Activities such as prospecting and treasure troving also occur in Wilderness Areas of the Tonto National Forest. Some of these activities are described briefly below. For further information on these activities including regulations and necessary permits, contact local the Forest Service Office.
Prospecting: Allowed within a designated Wilderness Area, prospecting requires an approved Plan of Operations. This includes any type of mineral extraction, etc.

Fees: Some permits may be needed to participate in recreational activities in Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area asks that visitors adhere to the Leave no Trace policy. A group size of no more than 15 people and no more than 15 head of pack or saddle animals of any type is enforced within this wilderness year-round. Motorized equipment and mechanized transport are prohibited.

Directions: To reach Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area from Payson, take AZ-260 25 miles to Chamberlain Trail (Portions unpaved). Turn right to stay on Chamberlain Trail for 16 miles then turn right onto NF 512/AZ-288/YOUNG HEBER RD. Continue to follow AZ-288 (Portions unpaved) for 5 miles. Travel from the Young Highway (288) south.
