The Highlands Center for Natural History has been providing quality outdoor science education for almost three decades. These educational programs, based on direct observation and discovery, reach thousands of children and adults in the tri-city area each year. The Highlands Center has established a sound reputation for quality and balance among the educators of Yavapai County and northern Arizona.
Their year-round youth programs now serve five school districts in Yavapai County, charter schools, private schools, and home-schooled children. They also have extensive out of school opportunities that include family Arts in Nature afternoons, nature clubs for children pre-school through middle school, and weeklong summer day camps. In addition, he Highlands Center provides field studies, lectures, workshops, and other activities to broaden the adult community's understanding of natural history in the Central Arizona Highlands.
The Highlands Center for Natural History is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit environmental education organization which offers quality programs for all ages. Our mission: The Highlands Center for Natural History helps children and adults discover the wonders of nature and become wise caretakers of the land. We believe that everyone has a fundamental need to connect with the natural world. This connection is fostered by the Center through outdoor-science education based on observation and discovery of the Central Arizona Highlands.
The Central Arizona Highlands, a unique biological and geological transition zone, lies between the lush Sonoran Desert and the vast Colorado plateau of Arizona. The Highlands Center for Natural History fills the singular role of providing hands-on public education about this region. A Special Use Authorization from the Prescott National Forest gives the Highlands Center permission to operate an 80-acre site within the Forest. This microcosm of the Central Arizona Highlands is used as an outdoor classroom and is integrated into learning programs for all ages. Additionally, in line with the mission of being wise caretakers of the land, the constructed campus area on the new site showcases practical green building strategies, fire-wise landscaping, water conservation, and native plant landscaping/site re-vegetation.
Originally called the Community Nature Center and hosting programs using a 20-acre natural site on Prescott Unified School District property, the Highlands Center for Natural History has served the residents of Central Arizona for nearly three decades. When the Highlands Center was incorporated in 1996, it took over the duties and financial responsibilities of the original organization. Since that time the Center has seen steady growth in community support - in donations, members, and volunteers.
The Highlands Center for Natural Historyis dedicated to expanding our balanced, hands-on environmental education for the rapidly growing regional community. Public programs offered by the Center are available to area residents and visitors to the region. The Highlands Center for Natural History has a reputation as a quality environmental education center is greatly appreciated by the educational community, our members, and our visitors alike.
