Considered one of the busiest lakes above the Mogollon Rim, Woods Canyon lake offers fishing, and small boat rentals. There is a general store and plenty of campgrounds.
There is no swimming allowed in the lake at the request of the Arizona Game and Fish Department. There is a boat launch area for small boats such as canoes and boats with electric motors.
Game and Fish stocks Woods Canyon Lake with rainbow trout and also contains brownies and brookies. Woods Canyon Lake receives heavy usage.
The dam at Woods Canyon Lake was constructed in 1955 by Arizona Game and Fish with fishing license dollars. Woods Canyon Lake provides 52 acres of public fishing water.


Facilities: A number of campgrounds, boat rentals and a general store are available at Woods Canyon Lake. A boat launch area is also provided. Woods Canyon Lake also provides restrooms and potable water.

Best Time To Visit: Woods Canyon Lake freezes during the winter. The area is open early May to late October, weather permitting.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: There is no swimming allowed in the lake. Pets must be leashed. A valid Arizona fishing license is required for anglers 14 and older.

Directions: To reach Woods Canyon from Payson turn right onto State Route 260. Follow 260 to the top of the Rim. Just as the highway crests the ascent there will be a left turn onto Forest Road 300, the Old Rim Road. Follow this road until the pavement ends. Turn right into the lake area.
