Abbey's Way Trail is a difficult 2-mile trail. There is an elevation change of 820 feet, starting at 6,900 feet and reaching 7,720 feet.
Abbey's Way Trail leaves Forest Road #487 to the northeast and heads towards a mountain meadow, which was part of an old homestead. The trail then climbs directly up the pine and Douglas fir covered slopes of Aztec Peak towards the lookout tower.
It includes some switchbacks near the top. The Abbey's Way Trail wraps around the peak and meets Forest Road #487 just east of the top of the peak. The trail is open to hikers and horseback riders.


Facilities: There are no facilities available on Abbey's Way Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Abbey's Way Trail is open spring through fall.

Fees: There are no use fees associated with this trail.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicap accessible.

Rules: If you PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT! All livestock should be kept out of the meadow at all times. The Abbey's Way Trail is closed to motor vehicles.

Directions: To reach Abbey's Way Trail from Payson, take state Hwy 260 east and turn south on state Hwy #288 (approximately 25 miles.) Travel south on state Hwy #288 to Forest Road #487. Take Forest Road #487 3 1/4 miles east. There is parking for several vehicles on the west side of Forest Road #487 across from the trail.
