Coon Creek Trail, at 4,700 feet elevation, is a difficult 4.4-mile trail that climbs to an elevation of 7,100 feet. The Coon Creek Trail offers access to the Sierra Ancha Wilderness. To help preserve the primeval character of this area, practice the "No Trace" technique of travel and camping.
The trail parallels Coon Creek at the lower end. There are views of the Salt River and Roosevelt Lake. Wildlife in the area include black bear, deer and javelina, vegetation includes Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, oak and sycamore.


Facilities: There are no facilities available at Coon Creek Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Coon Creek Trail is normally open spring through fall.

Fees: There are no use fees associated with this trail.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicap accessible.

Rules: This trail is located within the Tonto National Forest; forest regulations apply. No mechanized vehicles are allowed.

Directions: To reach Coon Creek Trail from Payson travel east on State Highway 260 to State Highway 288. Travel on State Highway 288 to Young. From Young, travel about 28 miles south on State Highway 288, Turn east on Forest Road 189 and travel east for five miles to the trailhead at Oak Creek Cabin. (Please do not disturb the range facilities located here). A high clearance vehicle is recommended for this road.
