Rim Trail is a well defined trail along the south rim of the Grand Canyon National Park. Most of Rim Trail is paved and some sections are accessible. The trail offers excellent walking for quiet views of the inner canyon and for visitors who desire an easy hike with minimal elevation change because the trail inclines to flat.
In winter surfaces may be slippery or icy when snowy. Beware of lightning during summer thunderstorms. There is shade along most of the trail. Trailhead Elevation: 6,820 feet, varies approximately 200 feet.
Rim Trail description starting at Pipe Creek Vista and heading west:
From Pipe Creek Vista and Mather Point, Rim Trail is paved and heads west towards the village. There is a bus stop. It is 1.3 miles from Pipe Creek Vista to Mather Point.
From Mather Point to Yavapai Point it is .7 miles. Mather Point is the closest overlook to Canyon View Informational Plaza. There are toilets available at Mather Point.
From Yavapai Point to Park Headquarters it is .75 miles. Toilets are available. There is a glass observation area with canyon information and a shuttle bus stop.
From Park Headquarters to Village Route Transfer it is 1 miles. The trail between Park Headquarters and Village Route Transfer passes historic buildings, restrooms and water.
From Village Route Transfer to Trailview Overlook it is .7 miles. There is a shuttle bus stop.
From Trailview Overlook to Maricopa Point it is .7 miles. There are good views of the Bright Angel Trail and a shuttle bus stop.
From Maricopa Point to Powell Point it is .5 miles. Along this stretch of the Rim Trail the pavement ends and the trail becomes a 3 foot wide dirt trail. There is another shuttle bus stop.
From Powell Point to Hopi Point it is .3 miles. Hopi Point is a great spot for viewing the sunset. There are toilets and a shuttle bus stop here.
From Hopi Point to Mohave Point it is .8 miles. There is a shuttle bus stop.
From Mohave Point to The Abyss it is 1.1 miles. There is a shuttle bus stop.
From The Abyss to Monument Creek Vista it is .9 miles. The dirt trail ends and becomes a 9 foot wide paved trail. Shuttle bus stop.
From Monument Creek Vista to Pima Point it is 1.7 miles. There is a shuttle bus stop.
From Pima Point to Hermits Rest it is 1.1 miles. There is a shuttle bus stop as well as a small gift shop and snack bar.


Facilities: There are toilets and water at stops along the trail. There is no water along the trail route. There is water in Grand Canyon Village area and at Hermits Rest.

Best Time To Visit: Open daily, weather permitting.

Fees: Park entrance fees apply. There are no additional fees to hike Rim Trail.

Accessibility: Most of Rim Trail is accessible. Between Pipe Creek Vista and Bright Angel Lodge only a few short sections of the trail have grades that exceed accessibility standards. West of Bright Angel Lodge, the Rim Trail narrows and climbs the Bright Angel Fault to viewpoints along Hermit Road. Between Powell Point and Monument Creek Vista the trail is a three foot wide dirt trail. The section of the Rim Trail between Monument Creek Vista and Hermits Rest is also known as the Hermit Road Greenway Trail.

Rules: Leashed pets are permitted on the trail but not on park shuttle buses.

Directions: Directions to Rim Trailhead: Begin from any viewpoint in Grand Canyon Village or along Hermit Road. Hikers can access the trail from many of the shuttle bus stops.
