Welcome to Interior Alaska! In Alaska's Interior Region, visitors can see the continent's tallest peak, Mt. McKinley, and wide expanses of tundra. The forests are teeming with wildlife and bird life ranging from the formidable grizzly to stately herds of caribou to the state bird, the Willow Ptarmigan. Come to experience Alaskan summer's midnight sun or the winter's northern lights.
Fairbanks
Wildlife can be seen on the highway that runs by Denali National Park, carrying visitors to and from Anchorage and Fairbanks. Interior is the original home of Alaska's Athabascan Indians.
Must see attraction in Alaska's Interior region include the Alaska Highway, the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve the Clearwater State Recreation Site offers fishing, camping and boat access to the Tanana and Goodpaster rivers. In Fairbanks, the Gateway to the Interior, Arctic and Far North, visitors should head to University of Alaska Museum of the North to view exhibits on Alaska's regions, wildlife and Native cultures.
While in Fairbanks, visitors can also tour a working gold mine, visit an authentic gold dredge or cruise the Chena River aboard a sternwheeler. Get a taste of pioneer life at Pioneer Park, featuring several museums, shops and authentic turn-of-the-century cabins and more.
When the midnight sun sets, the aurora borealis lights up the sky, providing the perfect backdrop for winter adventure. Dog sledding, both cross-country and downhill, skiing and snow machine riding opportunities are available from October through April. Throughout winter, Fairbanks hosts world-class sled dog races, an ice sculpting competition and other seasonal celebrations.
